Bronze is a copper alloy family, not one fixed material. A machining RFQ should move past the family name and define the Copper Alloy UNS number, product form, material condition, and product specification. ASTM B505/B505M-23 covers continuous-cast copper-alloy rod, bar, tube, and shapes; ASTM B584-22 covers copper-alloy sand castings; ASTM B150/B150M-26 covers aluminum bronze rod, bar, and shapes; ASTM B139/B139M-12(2024) covers phosphor bronze rod, bar, and shapes. The product route changes which chemistry, mechanical-property, dimensional, testing, and repair rules apply.
For bushings, gears, bronze bearings, and wear parts, the buying decision also needs load, speed, lubrication, mating material, temperature, finished tolerances, and inspection requirements. This guide uses C93200 bearing bronze, C63000 bronze, C95400 aluminum bronze, and C51000 phosphor bronze as decision examples, then shows how the material callout changes the CNC machining plan.
1. What Is Bronze, and What Does an RFQ Need Beyond the Family Name?
Bronze alloys form a copper-base material family. Bronze composition changes with the alloying system: tin bronze and phosphor bronze use Cu-Sn chemistry, aluminum bronze uses Cu-Al chemistry, and silicon bronze uses Cu-Si chemistry. Bearing bronze can include leaded or high-lead tin bronze grades. Nickel aluminum bronze, manganese bronze, bismuth bronze, and copper nickel bronze add more distinct families. A commercial label such as bronze metal, bronze material, or bearing bronze still does not identify a purchasable grade.
The same caution applies to bronze properties. Bronze density, bronze hardness, bronze thermal conductivity, bronze electrical conductivity, bronze corrosion resistance, bronze tensile strength, and bronze yield strength are grade and condition dependent. A generic bronze alloy properties table can hide differences in temper, section size, product form, and test basis.
A controlled purchase order should state the UNS grade, the ASTM designation and revision, the product form, the condition or temper, and any certificate or test requirement. Stock form belongs in the callout as well. Bronze bar, bronze rod, bronze tube, bronze round bar, bronze hollow bar, bronze plate, continuous cast bronze, and sand cast bronze do not share one acceptance basis.
Search language around the topic is broader than the engineering decision. “What is bronze made of?”, “what is phosphor bronze?”, “what is aluminum bronze?”, and “what is bearing bronze?” are valid entry questions, but the answer becomes useful to a buyer only after the family is tied to a grade and product form. The same applies to bronze material properties and bronze mechanical properties. A number without UNS, condition, section size, and test basis is weak evidence for a purchase decision.
Comparison searches also split into separate intents. Brass vs bronze, bronze vs brass, bronze vs steel, phosphor bronze vs brass, aluminum bronze vs brass, and aluminum bronze vs phosphor bronze can each justify their own material decision. This article does not turn those queries into side topics. It uses comparison only where it changes the choice of bronze bushing material, bronze bearing material, gear stock, or a wear component.
Broader CNC machining materials selection still matters when bronze competes with steel, brass, aluminum, or engineering plastics, but this article keeps the decision at grade and product-route level.
2. Main Types of Bronze for Bushings, Gears and Wear Parts
The useful bronze types for this search intent are the families that change a real bearing, gear, or wear-part decision. The table below keeps the family name, representative bronze grades, product route, and selection boundary together.
A silicon bronze alloy can also enter the candidate set when corrosion, fabrication, or joining drives the design, but its family name still needs a grade-specific product specification.
| Bronze family | Representative grades or terms | Product route covered here | Where it enters the decision | Do not infer from the family name |
| Bearing / high-lead tin bronze | C93200 bronze, C932 bronze, SAE 660, SAE 660 bronze | ASTM B505 continuous-cast stock; B584 sand casting when that route is specified | Bronze bushings, bronze sleeve bearing parts, bronze thrust washer and bronze thrust bearing components | PV limit, running clearance, shaft hardness, friction coefficient, wear life |
| Aluminum / nickel aluminum bronze | C95400 aluminum bronze, C954 bronze, C63000 bronze, C630 bronze | C95400 can appear in B505 continuous cast stock; C63000 rod/bar/shapes are covered by B150 | Higher structural load, selected bronze gears, shafts, wear parts | One universal machinability or wear ranking |
| Phosphor bronze | C51000 phosphor bronze, C51000 bronze, C52100 bronze, C54400 bronze | ASTM B139 wrought rod, bar and shapes | Gears, screw-machine parts, precision components, some bushing material decisions | One fixed strength or one family-wide machinability value |
| Other bronze alloys | Silicon bronze, tin bronze, manganese bronze, bismuth bronze, copper nickel bronze | Grade-specific | Corrosion, casting route, joining, load or regulatory requirement | A complete purchase specification from the family label alone |
ASTM B139/B139M-12(2024) names C51000, C52100, C52400, C53400, and C54400. It also notes that C51000, C52100, and C52400 are used for applications including gears, while C53400 and C54400 are free-machining alloys suited to screw-machine products. That wording supports grade screening. It does not provide gear life, wear rate, cutting speed, or feed.
The naming around bearing alloys creates another source of confusion. C932 bronze, C93200 bronze, SAE 660 bronze, high lead tin bronze, leaded bronze, and tin bearing bronze can point buyers toward the same general bearing-alloy space, but the purchase order still needs the exact UNS and product route. The same shorthand appears with C954 bronze, C630 bronze, C51000 bronze, C52100 bronze, and C54400 bronze. Use the exact UNS designation, such as UNS C51000 or UNS C93200, when the drawing or PO is meant to control material identity.
Application terms should be handled the same way. A bronze bushing, bushing bronze, bronze sleeve bearing, plain bearing material, sleeve bearing material, bronze thrust bearing, or metal bearing material label describes function more than chemistry. A wear resistant bronze or wear resistant alloy claim is also incomplete without counterface, pressure, speed, lubrication, temperature, and contamination. Those operating inputs decide whether the chosen grade is suitable.
C93200 bearing bronze is the strongest commercial search target in the bearing branch of the topic. Under ASTM B505/B505M-23, C93200 chemistry includes Cu 81 to 85%, Sn 6.3 to 7.5%, Pb 6 to 8%, and Zn 2 to 4%. Table 9 gives minimum tensile strength of 241 MPa, minimum yield strength of 138 MPa at 0.5% extension under load, and minimum elongation of 10%. For sections at or above 102 mm, the table note reduces the minimum tensile and yield requirements by 10%. Mechanical tests are required when the purchaser specifies them in the purchase order.
A separate yield strength vs tensile strength review is useful when a material table mixes yield definitions or treats tensile strength as the design limit.

3. Match the Bronze Grade to the Product Specification
The product specification is the line that stops a bronze grade from floating free of its manufacturing route. ASTM lists B505/B505M-23, B584-22, B150/B150M-26, and B139/B139M-12(2024) as active standards at the time of this review. Their scopes are different, so the same or similar alloy name cannot justify moving mechanical-property data from one route to another.
| Standard | Scope used in this article | Representative grades | Decision value | Boundary |
| ASTM B505/B505M-23 | Continuously cast rod, bar, tube and shapes | C93200; C95400 and other listed copper alloys | UNS, chemistry, mechanical requirements, machining allowance, dimensions, sampling and repair rules | No finished bearing clearance, PV, lubricant or service-life requirement |
| ASTM B584-22 | Copper-alloy sand castings for general applications | C93200, C93500, C93700, C93800, C94300, C86300 and others | UNS, chemistry, casting condition, separately cast test-bar mechanical properties, ordering and inspection framework | No universal porosity class, machining allowance, CNC tolerance, friction or wear-life ranking |
| ASTM B150/B150M-26 | Aluminum bronze rod, bar and shapes | C63000, C63020, C63200 and others | Temper, chemistry and mechanical requirements by form, size and condition | Not a sand-casting or continuous-cast specification |
| ASTM B139/B139M-12(2024) | Phosphor bronze rod, bar and shapes | C51000, C52100, C52400, C53400, C54400 | Chemistry, temper, tensile requirements by form and section size | No casting rules, universal hardness, CNC parameters or wear-life data |
Two details catch frequent comparison errors. ASTM B584 mechanical properties are determined from separately cast test bars, so those values are not direct measurements from every production casting. ASTM B139 shows that C51000 H04 tensile requirements change with size: 550 to 880 MPa below 6 mm round rod, at least 485 MPa at 6 to 12 mm, at least 415 MPa above 12 to 25 mm, and at least 380 MPa above 25 mm. A single C51000 strength number strips away the condition that made it valid.
C63000 shows the same issue from the aluminum bronze side. ASTM B150/B150M-26 separates standard-strength and high-strength rod. The RFQ should name the applicable strength condition instead of assuming that UNS C63000 alone fixes the mechanical requirement.

4. Selecting Bronze for Bushings, Bearings, Gears and Wear Parts
A bronze bushing or plain bearing should be screened from the operating duty. Start with projected pressure, sliding or oscillating speed, lubrication, shaft material and hardness, temperature, contamination, required running clearance, and seizure risk. Bronze strength alone cannot answer that set of questions.
The EPOC CRAFTER case BRZ-BSH-2026-017 used UNS C93200, SAE 660 bearing bronze, for a flanged bronze sleeve bearing in a servo-driven packaging-machine pivot. The 240-piece lot replaced a polymer bushing that had developed clearance growth, heat-related creep, and intermittent stick-slip. Recorded duty was 9.5 kN maximum radial load, about 3.8 MPa projected bearing pressure, 0 to 120 rpm, about 0.31 m/s maximum surface speed, ISO VG 68 circulating oil, and an AISI 4140 Q&T shaft at 29 to 31 HRC.
The finished bore was Ø50.075/+0.025 mm. Bore-to-OD total runout was limited to 0.030 mm, bore roundness to 0.020 mm, and bore roughness to Ra 1.6 µm. Those are drawing CTQs, not ASTM B505 stock tolerances. The material standard defines the continuous-cast stock; the drawing defines the machined bearing surface.
That split is the same one used in tight tolerance machining: control the dimensions that create a functional failure, then select the inspection method that can verify them.
C95400 aluminum bronze and C86300 manganese bronze were reviewed as alternatives in the same case. The recorded decision kept C93200 because the duty did not need their higher strength and the C93200 route reduced machining effort and cost for this lubricated pivot. The case record also defines the switch conditions: higher unit pressure, severe shock loading, sustained higher temperature, abrasive contamination, or a substantially higher structural-strength requirement.
Bronze gears need another filter. ASTM B139 identifies C51000, C52100, and C52400 for applications including gears, but the material standard does not set allowable tooth-root stress, pitting life, backlash, accuracy grade, or lubrication. Gear geometry and load analysis still control those values. For a bronze gear, the material callout should sit beside module or diametral pitch, pressure angle, tooth accuracy, mating gear material, lubrication, and inspection requirements.
Wear-resistant bronze is also too broad as a purchase description. A bronze thrust washer, guide, bronze wear plate, or sliding pad can fail by adhesive wear, abrasion, heat, contamination, or loss of lubrication. The same grade can behave differently when the counterface or lubricant changes. ASTM B505, B584, B150, and B139 do not supply a common bronze coefficient of friction, PV limit, seizure load, or service-life ranking across their alloy lists.

5. Bronze Machining: Use the Alloy and Stock Route to Set the Process
Bronze machining changes with grade and stock route. The phrase CNC machining bronze covers materials that do not cut the same way. C93200 bearing bronze, C63000 aluminum bronze, C51000 phosphor bronze, and C54400 free-machining phosphor bronze have different chemistry, condition, and chip behavior. ASTM material standards define the stock; they do not prescribe bronze cutting speed, bronze milling feeds, bronze turning feeds, insert grade, coolant, or tool life.
The same distinction helps with shop terminology. Machining bronze, bronze machining, bronze CNC machining, phosphor bronze machining, machining phosphor bronze, machining aluminum bronze, bronze milling, and bronze turning are process searches, not material specifications. The shop still needs grade, condition, geometry, tolerance, and stock form before a cutting plan is credible. A bronze casting or cast bronze blank also needs its casting specification and any added soundness requirement before finish machining starts.
The C93200 case used a 2-axis X/Z turning center with live-tool radial drilling. Tooling was a polished uncoated fine-grain carbide CCGT 09T304 insert with 12° positive rake and 0.4 mm nose radius. Recorded cutting data were 180 m/min rough turning, 220 m/min finish turning, 0.18 mm/rev rough feed, 0.08 mm/rev finish bore and OD feed, and 0.06 mm/rev radial drilling feed. These are job records from BRZ-BSH-2026-017, not general SAE 660 bronze machining recommendations.
The blank was Ø75 mm OD × Ø42 mm ID × 65 mm long. Hollow continuous cast bronze reduced raw-material removal by 34% compared with the solid-bar alternative and cut machining time by 3.6 min per part on this job. Four early pieces showed 0.021 to 0.024 mm bore taper at the chuck-side end. The correction reduced boring-bar overhang, replaced the insert, and added a 0.10 mm/rev spring pass.
The accepted lot measured Ø50.087 to Ø50.099 mm at the bore, 0.018 mm maximum bore-to-OD runout, 0.012 mm maximum bore roundness, and Ra 0.65 to 0.92 µm on the bore. First-pass yield was 236/240; all 240 parts were accepted after rework, with zero scrap. These numbers document one production process. They do not define bronze machinability for other grades or geometries.
Phosphor bronze machining needs the same discipline. ASTM B139 directly calls C53400 and C54400 free machining, but it does not publish SFM, feed, tool geometry, or coolant. Machining aluminum bronze also needs the exact UNS and condition before a shop commits to process assumptions. A C63000 high-strength rod is not a drop-in process match for C93200 bearing bronze.
When a quote includes tight bores, runout, or surface-finish CTQs, the CNC tolerances and standards page gives the inspection and drawing framework that sits beside the material callout.
6. What to Put on a Bronze RFQ
A bronze RFQ should separate the raw material definition from the finished-part CTQs. The following checklist works for bronze bushings, bronze bearings, gears, thrust components, and machined wear parts.
| RFQ field | What to state | Why it changes the quote or acceptance |
| Alloy | Copper Alloy UNS number; commercial name only as a secondary label | Removes ambiguity between bronze grades and family names |
| Specification | ASTM designation and revision | Connects the grade to the intended product route |
| Product form | Rod, bar, tube, hollow round, shape, sand casting or other defined form | Changes material removal, workholding, stock tolerances and inspection |
| Condition | Temper, heat-treated condition, or strength class where applicable | Mechanical requirements can change within one UNS |
| Functional CTQs | Bore, OD, runout, roundness, flatness, surface finish, gear features, oil grooves | Defines the finished-part acceptance basis |
| Mating system | Shaft material and hardness, clearance, lubrication, temperature, contamination | Needed for a plain bearing or sliding interface decision |
| Documentation | Material certificate, MTR, chemistry, tensile or hardness test when required, dimensional report, FAI | Stops optional tests from being assumed |
| Casting additions | Soundness, pressure or agreed inspection when a B584 casting needs it | B584 does not create one universal porosity class |
A compact callout for the case part would read: “Material: UNS C93200 bearing bronze, ASTM B505/B505M-23, continuous-cast hollow stock. Material certificate required. Finished dimensions, bore roundness, runout, and surface finish per drawing.” The exact stock dimensions can be added when the sourcing route is fixed.
Geometry and tolerance choices that still create unnecessary machining can be reviewed against the CNC DFM design guidelines before release.
Once the material, stock route, and CTQs are fixed, CNC machining services can quote the defined bronze part instead of interpreting an open-ended material note.
7. FAQ
7.1 What Is the Best Bronze for Bushings or High-Friction Wear Parts?
C93200 bearing bronze is a practical starting candidate for lubricated moderate-load bronze bushings, but it is not a universal best bronze for bearings or bushings. Higher pressure, severe shock, abrasive contamination, temperature, poor lubrication, or a stronger structural requirement can move the selection toward another bearing material, aluminum bronze alloy, phosphor bronze alloy, or a different bearing system. The decision needs pressure, speed, shaft pairing, lubrication, clearance, and environment before the grade is locked.
7.2 Does Phosphor Bronze Machine Well, Especially C51000?
Do not assign one machinability label to every phosphor bronze grade. ASTM B139 identifies C53400 and C54400 as free-machining grades; it does not give the same statement to C51000. A machinist discussing C510 in a 2024 Reddit thread asked about turning 0.045 in square stock, which is the right level of detail: grade, geometry, operation, support, and finish requirement all change the process. For C51000 phosphor bronze, use the actual temper and section size, then develop tooling and feeds from the part and machine.
7.3 Is SAE 660/C932 a Sensible Choice for Bronze Wear Pads or Guides?
SAE 660, UNS C93200, belongs on the candidate list for lubricated sliding pads, guides, and plain-bearing parts when the duty matches a bearing-bronze system. A 2026 machinist discussion about bronze steady-rest pads asked specifically about “SAE 660/C932 bearing bronze” and wear-related taper. That question exposes the missing design inputs: contact pressure, lubrication, surface protection, adjustment, and mating-part hardness. Specify those conditions with the C93200 product form instead of relying on the commercial name alone.
A bronze part should reach purchasing with a grade, product route, condition, and drawing that agree with each other. For sliding parts, add the shaft or counterface, lubricant, load, speed, temperature, and required clearance. For cast parts, add the soundness or pressure requirement that the function needs. Keep machining parameters separate from the ASTM material standard unless the cited source really contains them.
